The annual international exhibition “Meat and Poultry Industry Russia 2021”.
Professional dialogue
The rich business program of the exhibition allowed exhibitors and industry experts to discuss the most pressing issues. Global and Russian poultry and livestock feed markets, biological safety in agriculture and veterinary medicine, increasing the efficiency of the industry, innovation and personnel issues became the topics of professional dialogue at the plenary session and industry sections.
A high level of discussion of the main professional issues in the framework of the plenary session was set by the speeches of the invited speakers. Among them are Galina Bobyleva, Doctor of Economics, General Director of Nonprofit organization “Poultry union of Russia”, Yuri Kovalev, General Director of the National Union of Swine Breeders. The plenary session was moderated by Albert Davleev, President of Agrifood Strategies. Traditionally, the most significant topics were brought up to the plenary session. The reports of Leo den Hartog, director of research, development and quality, Nutreco, Nan-Dirk Mulder, senior specialist in animal proteins, Rabobank and Dmitry Aveltsov, head of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Agroanalytics Center, were devoted to assessing the current state and prospects of the meat industry. Ekaterina Luchkina, Executive Director of the National Union of Meat Processors, spoke about the current situation in the meat processing industry. The topic "Quality of feed and ingredients, risks and decisions: the impact of quality on quantity, animal health, quality of meat: higher costs, but higher profit" during the session was covered by Jan Konterbach, Chief Engineer, Wellhope De Heus.
Russian meat producers, increasing their production volumes, successfully meet the needs and demand of the domestic market and increase their presence in the global market. The total export of Russian meat in 2020 will increase by more than 50% and will exceed 490 thousand tons.
However, meat producers in many countries face new challenges. In particular, the aggressive agenda of radical environmentalists accusing livestock breeders of environmental pollution. Mark Kolotovkin, Head of Cattle Department and Grant Aydinyan, Technical Director of Alltech, devoted their keynotes to this topic. Another important challenge for livestock breeders is the problem of biological safety and quality of meat products. A special session - "Biological safety in agriculture and veterinary medicine" - was devoted to this topic. The session participants discussed the issues of biosafety of pedigree and cattle products, the requirements of various countries for the content of chemical pollutants in livestock products, microbiological control of the quality of feed in the Russian Federation, the organization and implementation of veterinary and sanitary expertise in farms and other relevant topics.

The evening continuation of the plenary session was devoted to feed markets. The session was moderated by Sergey Shabaev, Ph.D., President of Agrosprom, Chairman of the International Forum of Poultry Farmers and President of the Eurasian Association of Poultry Farmers.
Oleg Kobyakov, Director of the FAO Office for Liaison with the Russian Federation, spoke about how the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the meat and dairy industry are affecting them. The consequences of COVID-19, bird flu, as well as the resulting changes in consumer preferences were presented by Konstantin Korneev, Executive Director of Rincon Management LLC. These global events also influenced the domestic market. Anastasia Jafarova, Director of Customer Relations of the Consumer Panel Research Department of GFK Rus, devoted her report to an overview of trends in the consumption of categories in meat and meat products market in Russia.
In addition to situational issues, the evening part of the plenary session also discussed topics traditional for the market, including production profitability. Dr. Jani Chiaia, President of the Romanian Feed Manufacturers Association and Consultant to the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC), discussed the impact of feed costs on profitability in broiler production. And the USSEC itself also acted as a partner of the Summit this year.
Global trends are gradually changing the way large and small meat producers work. Marina Khvan, founder and managing partner of the Chestnaya Ferma farm, spoke about the prospects for farms in the context of the global industrialization of the agricultural sector.
Oleg Radin, President of the Association of Enterprises of Advanced Grain Processing Soyuzkrakhmal, highlighted new market opportunities and challenges. It is impossible to cope with new challenges without betting on impeccable product quality. As Narine Bagmanyan, president of the Asti Group exhibition company, organizer of the exhibition, noted, the requirements for the quality of products are becoming more stringent. And market participants respond to this by increasing environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, and manageability of agricultural enterprises. That is why in 2021 the entire production chain of poultry and livestock products was presented in the business program of the exhibition. And also the part of it, to which less attention was paid at past exhibitions, including the production of ingredients for processing, food additives, organization of storage and delivery, the development of a constant demand for a quality product.
Export landmarks
Conditions necessary for successful work in export markets have become a popular topic for many exhibitors. Successful work in foreign markets was discussed within the framework of the session "Foreign trade: promising directions of export and market demand for imports." The session was moderated by Andrey Terekhin, Head of the Department for Interaction with Industry Unions and State Institutions, Cherkizovo.
One of the main vectors for increasing export supplies remains the production of environmentally friendly organic products and the development of the Halal industry. Oleg Mironenko, Executive Director of the National Union of Producers and Consumers of Organic Products, spoke about what is important to know for the export of organic products. Topical issues in the development of the Halal industry were presented by Eduard Khamidullin, head of the MCSIS Halal LLC certification department.
Natalya Panferova, advisor to the director of the Center for Grain Quality Assessment, and Denis Kazannikov, the head of the export support project for the agro-industrial complex Russian Expert Center (REC), presented their financial instruments to support exports.
Reducing import dependence
The topic of export supplies was also touched upon in the section “Ensuring biosafety and increasing production efficiency, including poultry feeding”.
As noted by Galina Bobyleva, Doctor of Economics, General Director of Nonprofit organization “Poultry union of Russia”, Russian poultry companies plan to more than double the volume of exported products in the next five years. The task is to increase the volume of exported products to 700 thousand tons by 2025, and to reach the mark of one million tons by 2030.
However, it will be extremely difficult to achieve these indicators in the context of significant import dependence in the production of poultry products. Steps in this direction have already been taken. Thus, Smena selection and genetic center has created a four-line cross with a high genetic potential. It is important to develop this area actively and quickly. Since the cost of hatching eggs has increased by 23% most of all it affects the growth of the cost of poultry meat.
Another important topic in this section was the topic of ensuring the biosafety of enterprises and prevention of poultry diseases. Sergey Yakovlev, chief veterinary expert of Nonprofit organization “Poultry union of Russia”, devoted his report to ensuring biosafety at poultry farms. Svetlana Polyakova, chief veterinarian of Aviagen LLC, spoke about the prevention of bird flu in poultry farms. Alexey Frolov, Leading Specialist of SPE “AVIVAC” Ltd., presented practical measures to overcome heat stress in poultry. The section participants got acquainted with new zoohygienic solutions, disinfection stations, as well as modern digital technologies for the efficient production of poultry meat.

By the beginning of 2021, Russia has become one of the largest exporters of pork, and the level of its consumption within the country peaked in 30 years. The fully realized potential of import substitution and satisfied domestic demand led manufacturers to look for profitability in foreign markets. With a favorable epizootic situation, pork export by the end of 2021 will set a new record - 250 thousand tons. This situation puts Russian pig farmers in a special position.
As the speakers of the session "Veterinary Medicine in Pig Breeding: How to Ensure Competitiveness in Foreign Markets" noted, in the context of increasing pork supplies abroad, first of all, it is important to ensure the biological safety of pig farms. Inna Levitskaya, a leading expert in the field of pig breeding in Russia and the CIS countries, a consultant doctor at VETPROM, devoted her report to this topic.
Experts from the leading veterinary companies of Russia took part in the topic discussion: Konstantin Popov, leading veterinarian for pig breeding, "NVC" AgroVetZashita" LLC; Lyubov Denisova, leading veterinary consultant at VIC Group; Pavel Kraynyak, pig breeding director, NITA-FARM; Sergey Kukushkin, head of the technical department of pig products in CIS countries, Boehringer Ingelheim; Mikhail Sorokin, Ph.D. D., National Veterinary Manager Zoetis; Alexander Mishin, Ph.D. D., Chief Researcher of "Vetbiohim" Department of Clinical Trials and others.
As the session participants noted, additional factors for maintaining and increasing margins in Russian pig breeding include such factors as: concentration of production in large holdings, a rise in sow productivity due to an increase in the average weight of commercial pigs and the implementation of selection and genetic technologies.
Competitions and a new Association
Competitions are a traditional and important part of the international exhibition “Meat and Poultry Industry Russia 2021”. One of the most popular among the visitors of the exhibition was the "Best Traditional Product of 2021" tasting competition , organized by "Asti Group" exhibition company. The highest assessment of the quality of their products was received by OOO “Myasnoy Dom Borodina"; IP Fedorenko N.V.; JSC PRODO Poultry Farm Kaluzhskaya; LLC “Chernyshihinsky Meat Processing Plant”; GC "DAMATE" and LLC "Ulybino" Poultry farm. All participants in the competition received well-deserved medals, which will undoubtedly open up new opportunities for promoting these products on the Russian market.
The competition for innovative projects also attracted a lot of attention from experts and major market players. The best project in the "Latest technologies and services for poultry and livestock breeding" category within the framework of the exhibition were the solutions presented by Matrix LLC from Belgorod: "1C: Breeding in animal husbandry. Pig breeding" and "1C: Selection in animal breeding. Cattle". These software solutions are intended for conducting zootechnical and breeding work, allow for the automatic generation of regulatory, internal and management reporting.
Exhibition “Meat and Poultry Industry Russia 2021” will go down in history as the date of birth of a new Association - the National Association of Turkey Producers. The founders of the new industry association are Penzamolinvest LLC, PK Ural LLC, Agro-Plus LLC, Ascor LLC, MC Agroindustrial Group BVK JSC and Indyushkin Dvor LLC. The Association plans to admit leading Russian research centers, universities, other sectoral unions of agricultural producers and processors to implement joint programs for the development of turkey breeding, poultry meat market and agricultural products in general. The Association is headed by Andrey Kovalev.
HR Congress
Another important event of the exhibition was the VII All-Russian Congress of the leading HR-directors of the Russian agro-industrial complex. The work of the congress was opened by Grigory Aksanyan, chief expert on the development of the industry of the National Union of Swine Breeders and Tatyana Eremeeva, General Director of the Vremya HR Recruiting Agency (EXECTLY). Experts noted that the staffing situation in the Russian agricultural business worsened last year due to COVID-19 and the ban on the entry of foreigners who are traditionally recruited for seasonal agricultural work. In such a situation, agricultural enterprises had to look for non-standard solutions. However, the traditional work of finding, hiring, motivating and retaining qualified specialists in the agricultural business requires new approaches. And this experience has already been accumulated in Russian agricultural companies. Irina Yabreyeva, HR and Organizational Development Director, RUSAGRO Group spoke about her experience in developing internal communications using corporate television. Igor Vasin, ex-HRD of "APK" KOPITANIA "presented his vision of how agricultural companies can retain valuable employees if it is not possible to pay market salaries using low-cost methods of forming a social package. Natalia Machneva, HR Director of JSC Lancet presented her experience in managing staffing levels through increasing the efficiency of HR processes.
Three exhibition days at Crocus Expo were eventful, useful and interesting. Professional dialogue within the framework of the business program, direct communication between meat market players and experts and representatives of government agencies, competitions will become the basis for the successful development of the industry and will be continued next year, March 16-18, 2022, here at Crocus Expo.
